Understanding: Lack of Tolerance

Understanding

I think the idea of understanding is completely overrated.

The people around us don’t “have to understand” this or that.

Just because a person “will never understand” something, doesn’t mean they’re necessarily a stupid, or wholly uninformed, or unwilling person.

People don’t “need to understand” everything.

The problem is not other people not understanding.

The problem is in other people behaving and speaking in ways that show that they are unwilling to be receptive to new ideas. They are unwilling to budge even a little from their negative view on something. They don’t have to understand your point of view. It’s not some kind of life requirement. They don’t even have to accept it, or tolerate it.

They can misunderstand, judge, be un-accepting and intolerant all they want. Silently.

It’s not those things that are the problem.

It’s the action those things fuel that is the problem.

It’s the voicing in a derogatory manner their intolerance and lack of acceptance and unwillingness to try to understand or accept or tolerate. It’s acting vocally or physically on those utterly human feelings that is the problem.

And the other half of that problem is in the rest of people balking at the intolerance so much.

If they aren’t harming you, yours, or someone you know with their intolerance and judgement, leave them to it. You have the choice to not associate with those people. You have a choice to ignore them. You don’t have to “educate” them, or “make them understand” or try to force them to be more tolerant.
